Arctic Ocean Birding Expedition

At Sea – Dogger Bank
A full day at sea crossing the Dogger Bank, an area rich in marine life. Keep watch for white-beaked dolphins, harbour porpoises, minke whales, and orcas, as well as a variety of seabirds. Introductory lectures and briefings begin onboard.

Arrival: Aberdeen
Passengers arriving from Vlissingen enjoy a complimentary excursion:

• Fowlsheugh Cliffs – Home to over 100,000 nesting seabirds
  or
• Ythan Estuary – Seals, shorebirds, and sweeping coastal scenery

Later, additional guests join in Aberdeen, marking the official start of the Arctic expedition.

Fair Isle
Spend the day on Fair Isle, famous for its traditional knitwear and exceptional birdlife. Walk among accessible seabird breeding grounds and watch for grey seals along the coast.

At Sea
Head north into increasingly remote waters. Time on deck is rewarded with chances to spot minke, fin, blue, and orca whales. Birding continues throughout the day, supported by expert guides and onboard lectures.

At Sea
Another wildlife-rich day at sea as we approach Jan Mayen. Scan the horizon for whale blows and seabirds riding the winds above the open ocean.

Jan Mayen
Visit this stark volcanic island dominated by Mt. Beerenberg (2,300 m). With permission, explore:

• The Norwegian weather station
• Remains of a 17th-century Dutch whaling site
• Moss-covered volcanic terrain and glacier-fed coastlines

High Arctic Waters
Sail north under the midnight sun along the drifting sea ice. This is prime territory for bowhead whales, harp seals, seabirds, and possibly polar bears. Conditions determine the day’s route as the expedition team maximizes wildlife opportunities.

Spitsbergen
Cruise along the continental shelf of western Spitsbergen, where nutrient-rich waters attract fin and minke whales, especially near glacier fronts and fjord mouths.

Explore areas such as Forlandsundet, St. Johns Fjord, or Isfjorden. Possible highlights include walrus haul-outs, seabird cliffs, Arctic foxes, and grazing reindeer amid dramatic Arctic scenery.
